Born in Yorkshire during a time when crafting and repurposing were everyday practices, Susan Barter’s early immersion in making has profoundly influenced her creative journey.

With several decades of experience in the fashion industry, Susan has honed her expertise in tailoring, patternmaking, construction, and the core principles of fashion design.

Completing her master’s in Art & Design marked a pivotal moment in her career, allowing her to explore fashion through a theoretical lens. This deepened her passion for sustainable fashion, where she emphasizes the importance of quality, longevity, and repair in her teaching.

In 2024, Susan showcased a series of 1/2 scale calico toiles at the “Re-generation” exhibition, demonstrating her commitment to sustainable practices and her ongoing dedication to redefining her teaching methods.

 

Her approach to fashion design is deeply rooted in environmental and ethical awareness, empowering students to become responsible, critical-thinking problem solvers.
