Diploma in Web Development + Design

The programme is composed of theory and practice that covers the essential skills and fundamental knowledge required to work in the IT industry as a web developer.

 

This programme is designed for those looking to gain an entry-level role as a web developer. You’ll also gain practical IT and professional skills needed to succeed in your IT career.

Outline

On completion of this programme, graduates will be able to customise front-end web solutions or proceed to further IT related studies. They will also be capable of operating within applicable professional standards and practice, both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Where could this programme take you?

Graduates of this programme will be able to:

 

  • Apply the fundamentals of information systems concepts and practice to prepare and present relevant web solutions
  • Write code that adheres to coding and web standards to implement and customise a secure and accessible solution using frameworks, libraries and appropriate plugin modules
  • Apply HCI principles to design and implement accessible and responsive user interfaces (UI) which enhance user experience (UX) and functionality
  • Create and execute a test plan consistent with industry standards to test functionality and usability of a web solution on multiple platforms to meet client requirements
  • Implement, configure, and deploy a tested web solution, including creating accurate and clear documentation for both end users and technical staff, to meet client requirements
  • Apply the fundamentals of IT technical support concepts and practice to securely manage hardware, software, and networking resources
  • Apply the fundamental principles of software development, which includes mathematical and logical concepts, to plan, create, test and document simple working code
  • Apply professional, legal, and ethical principles and practices in a socially responsible manner as an emerging IT professional
  • Apply communication, collaboration, teamwork, documentation, and customer service skills to enhance effectiveness in an IT role
  • Apply critical analysis and decision-making techniques to solve problems and provide relevant and timely IT outcomes.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Turn 17 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • Achieve 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent) including:

14 credits in Digital Technologies or Computing, and

10 credits in Maths, and

10 credits in English at NCEA Level 2 or above.

OR one of the following:

  • Have a Certificate in IT Essentials, or Certificate in Information Technology or Diploma in Information Technology Technical Support
  • Achieve a minimum of 60% in the Skills and Knowledge Assessment.

International applicants must:

  • Turn 18 within their first year of study at Whitecliffe
  • Provide academic and work experience documentation
  • Have achieved prior to enrolling an IELTS Academic overall score of 5.5 with no band less than 5.0 or equivalent (whitecliffe.ac.nz/english-proficiency-outcome)
  • Provide a statement of purpose
  • Achieved NCEA Level 3 certificate in computing or equivalent, OR achieve a minimum of 60% in the Skills and Knowledge Assessment
  • Meet New Zealand visa entry requirements

This programme has Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) requirements, we recommend you follow the specifications listed as these will support you to be successful in your studies.

  • 8 GB RAM (Recommended 16 GB)
  • 250 GB SSD or higher hard drive with 10GB free space minimum
  • Wireless capability 802.11n dual-band
  • Up-to-date antivirus software

Minimum Operating System

  • Windows 10 (64-bit) version 1809 or later; LTSC versions are not supported (a must for IT Students)

  • Apple macOS Mojave (version 10.14) or later
  • Internet and data plan.

  • Tablets (except Windows Surface Pro or iPad Pro)
