BFA Photography Major

In the international art arena photography, film and video are seen as the most exciting media for the 21st century. The study of photography at Whitecliffe College embraces both commercial and fine art practices. The department focuses on a fluid exchange between still and moving images, promoting the creative application of these different disciplines. The major encourages students to develop original vision and lateral thinking - essential aspects of acquiring a competitive edge.

What to expect

Students are given a thorough grounding in the technical skills surrounding photography, film and video. All levels are catered for, as some students have never touched a camera before and some have already studied the basic principles at school.

Within photography, students are instructed in all aspects of black-&-white photography, handling different format cameras, studio work, digital imaging, and colour photography. The colour photography is uniquely extensive. Whitecliffe is one of few institutes where students are taught to process all types of colour films as well as print colour negatives and Cibachrome.

In video, students are given instruction in a broad range of areas that encompass both commercial and contemporary art practice applications. They also become familiar with digital and analogue editing suites, and gain knowledge in their understanding and use of sound and lighting.

Facilities

Four darkrooms are located on the Main campus. The largest of these is more than enough to accomodate a class of 12/13 students working at a time. There is also a professional lighting studio on campus, open to all students (not just PFV majors). With both Black & White and Colour processing gear, students are also able to hire SLR cameras and digital cameras (subject to availability) to get them started.

Major Outcomes

To prepare for a career in photography, the most important ingredient is cultivating originality. Students are prepared for photography careers in areas such as fine arts practice, portraiture, freelancing or commercial photography for advertising agencies and magazines. In film and video, students may produce their own television programmes, run their own production businesses, and/or work as part of production teams within the television industry.
